Does this sound like "progressive jazz rock" to you?

Posted by Andrew Wed, 31 Jan 2007 18:46:00 GMT

While the title may sound a little like that famous pickup line “Does this smell like chloroform to you?” this post is nothing like that. Okay…. So it’s a little similar but, don’t worry, I promise you’ll stay conscious.

For a while I’ve had some of my music up on last.fm (which for those of you who don’t know is a music social networking site with recommendation streaming, tagging, artist pages, track previews and the like). I’ve seen a couple of listens to my tracks each week, but nothing major. Enough to keep me interested, and somewhat surprised that people continue to listen to my music and don’t just click “skip”.

Anyhow, I was looking at my label stats today, and saw that I could now see my most common tags. I was surprised to see that I had been tagged as “progressive jazz rock”. I would have never chosen that label, but there you go. Now, I ask you: does this sound like progressive jazz rock to you?

If you haven’t already, I recommend you check out last.fm, and get some stats going. It’s really very good at what it does.

A Whole Lot of Nothing

Posted by Andrew Wed, 26 Apr 2006 19:26:00 GMT

The title pretty much sums up all that I’ve been doing the last few days. A few vague attempts at doing something have been attempted, and really failed at the first sign of trouble. I resurrected Return to Castle Wolfenstein, because I enjoyed that game quite a lot.

Of course, I did manage to organise for my friends to come over to watch the Waratahs’ game tomorrow. It should be good. I don’t really know much about union. Never played it as a kid, and have only picked up what I could from watching it on TV and having a few friends who are heavily involved. Up until recently, I don’t really think I had the build to play union. I’m 6’1” and most of my body mass is on my legs. I don’t have particular speed, and I can just imagine breaking multiple ribs on my first tackle.

Now days, however, things are changing. I’ve been going to the gym twice a week and seeing results. I’ve put on 2.7Kg, which is quite cool, seeing as I couldn’t put on any weight for a long time before that. I’m feeling fitter than I have since perhaps year 8.

Anywho, I’ll leave you all with something to listen to. It’s the beginnings of one of my HSC compositions. Enjoy.

Bam - Knock it up a notch!

Posted by Andrew Mon, 03 Apr 2006 15:15:00 GMT

Wow. Over the last few days something strange, though not altogether bad has been happening: I have been productive. Actually, I don’t know if I have actually been productive, but I certainly have felt it. Last night, I planned everything out. 2 hours on the united at uluru website, 2 hours on music, an hour on maths. And I made some breakthroughs, but I just felt good.

Today, in maths (after being sent out to finish my breakfast :P), I was so bored I started working through excercises ahead of the class. I managed to finish a few pages of logarithms work while everyone else was listening to the drone of the teacher. I even managed to tune into the class a few times and answer some questions, just for browny points :)

After that, during my free period, something really strange happened. I wasted my period off by completing my maths assignment which didn’t quite get done the night before. Everything seemed to be clicking. After a little break and english, I was on my way home. After recovering a little and rehydrating, I went upstairs and planned out my evening. And guess what, I’ve got stuff done. More maths, a bunch of music, and even some blogging!

It just feels so good. Everything is clicking. I don’t know how long it will last, but it’s good. I don’t like the idea of planning my week, but planning day by day on my way home. It just seems to give me some direction. I’m just waiting for my dad to read this and say “I told you so” :P

If you’re interested in my music work, here’s a link to what I’ve done so far. It’s not finished, the EQ and reverb on the strings is way off, and I have ideas for vocal parts as well, but the general harmonic idea is there. There’s room for development and a climax, which I’m looking forward to getting onto in my second 30 miniute music work block tonight. For now, my free time block is ending, so I’ll head over to physics :)

Extended Progress

Posted by Andrew Wed, 22 Feb 2006 15:52:00 GMT

Today I finally actually managed to get something done with my music composition. I’ve been spinning my wheels for weeks, months even, and finally I’ve got something out. It feels good. Here’s a sneak preview, which may give you some idea of what it will sound like. It’s not finished, and isn’t even close, it’s missing a melody, a guitar part and about a minute more of… Stuff, but I like it.. At the moment. What can I say? <3 Logic Pro :)

I’d almost like to be able to do this live, to have the piano miced up and run it through logic, if I can sync it up. It’s be a sick mandatory performance, although the one I’m looking at is also rather cool.

Down With Copyright: Amen Brother!

Posted by Andrew Tue, 21 Feb 2006 11:48:00 GMT

Actually, I’m all for copyright, to some extent. I however strongly disagree with it for sampling. I do a lot of sample based work, and it really makes my life hard. After this I’m considering just yoinking samples and waiting for cease and desist letters :)

What brought this on? A fantastic video which explains the origins of perhaps the most influential sample ever: the Amen break. It also puts a good case for the removal of copyright for sampling purposes.
